Here are a few trips I can recommend, as I have taken them myself!
- Stonehenge: The obvious day trip for tourists visiting England. It is certainly a cool place to see once in your life. I suggest taking an excursion which includes this in addition to other destinations. It is a long way to go to London just to see some big rocks!
- Bath: Even farther from London, this was a cute town with lots of history even dating back to Roman times.
- Windsor Castle: Obviously not allowing visitors when the Queen is in residence, it is a cool place to visit to see how the royals really live.
- Warwick Castle: A medieval castle built by William the Conqueror, this castle is now owned by the same entertainment group that operates Madame Tussaud's Wax Museums. Unsurprisingly, it is like visiting a theme park!
- Lacock: A suuuper cute village that looks to be unspoiled by modern technology. I highly recommend taking a trip to the abbey, which has been in multiple films including some of Harry Potter, and the BBC version of 'Pride and Prejudice'.
- Oxford: The oldest university in the English speaking world resides in this very walkable town. Not all areas of the university are open to visitors, but it is worth seeing regardless. Be sure to stop by the museum to catch a glimpse of Guy Fawkes lantern!
- Canterbury: I am putting this in here, even though this was way more than a day trip for me. Canterbury is the town in which I studied abroad for a semester. I am adding it because I believe it would be a wonderful day trip for anyone visiting London! The town is extremely walkable, and the cathedral is a really awesome site with tons of incredible history.
- Cambridge: Having already visited Oxford, I would love to visit Cambridge to be able to compare the two. So many important people studied here, and I have read that enjoying a punting tour down the river operated by a student is a nice way to spend a sunny day!
- Basildon Park: England is known for its majestic stately homes. This lovely example was used as Netherfield in the Kiera Knightly 'Pride and Prejudice' as well as being used in scenes in 'Downton Abbey'. And, unlike the actual home used as Downton Abbey or those used as Pemberley, this home is close enough to see in a day trip from London.
- Stratford-Upon-Avon: This medieval market town is made famous by being the birthplace of William Shakespeare.
That is all I have for now. Anyone other London day trip suggestions?
